Interview with ka lok

Interview with ka lok

We sat down with Dalton Lam, also known as ka lok, for an interview in January, 2025 about his upcoming show at Winterruption Swift Current, his influences, and more!

For those who aren't familiar with you, could you talk a little about the type of music you make, your inspirations and what we can expect from your show?

Ka Lok (Dalton lam): I started making this music during Covid lockdown so I had a lot of time to learn how to produce music. My influences for this project [are] electronic music and a lot of cinematic scores. I love Hans Zimmer. I love movie music. Studio Ghibli films, that kind of thing.  I try to make the show as seamless as possible. If you feel like the set is five minutes long, that’s a good thing. The visual aspects of the show are quite involved, it’s a huge part of my production. If all goes according to plan, it will be kind of like watching a movie.

Is there a song are you most excited to perform?

KL: I’m very excited for this 30 second transition in the whole set. That’s what I’m excited for.

Where does the name Ka Lok come from?

KL: Ka Lok is my Chinese name.

You are originally from Swift Current, but now call Regina home. Are you looking forward to playing for an audience in your hometown?

KL: Yeah, I haven’t played at the Lyric in a long time. The Lyric Theatre is where I first started playing live.

Winter in Saskatchewan can be long and lonely. What are your favorite activities to keep the winter blues at bay?

KL: Cross-country skiing if the snow allows for it. Going on hikes. Just embracing the cold.

Any place you’re looking forward to visiting while you’re back in town?

KL: My parents’ restaurant, Casey’s. It’s right next door. I spent a lot of time there. Hopefully do some deliveries for them.

What are you working on right now? Any exciting projects in the works?

KL: I’m slowly trying to finish my debut EP. All the songs I’ve been working on since the start of this project. Hopefully that gets done this spring.

Anything else you want to share/think we should know?

KL: Bring your friends! Just come experience it. Once you see it, you’ll appreciate what I’m putting out.
